What is kiln dried wood?
Kiln drying is the process in which logs are force dried in a commercial kiln. This removes the water from the wood which results in it catching light more easily and producing more heat in comparison to seasoned logs when burned.
Wood has a different moisture content depending on the species of timber. Properly dried we can reduce the moisture level to the optimum 20% or lower.
Burning wood around this level of moisture content generates more than twice as much heat as burning wood at 50% moisture content. In other words, you would need to burn twice as many logs with a high moisture content to get the same amount of heat output.
This makes kiln dried hardwood logs not only more energy efficient but a more cost effective source of wood fuel.
Another great benefit of using kiln dried wood is that it burns considerably cleaner, your chimney will not fill with tar and the glass on the front of your stove will not blacken.
Kiln dried logs are ideal for use in wood burning stoves, multifuel stoves, chimeneas, campfires and pizza ovens.
